Mythology Monday: Ariadne

April 24, 2017April 18, 2017 / kaitlinbevis / Leave a comment

Ariadne (Libera) was one of the few humans in Greek mythology to be elevated to a divine status. She was a Princess of Crete, daughter to Minos, and she played a large role in Theseus’s quest to solve the labyrinth and defeat the minotaur (she gave Theseus a sword and thread). Theseus took her with … Continue reading Mythology Monday: Ariadne

Mythology Monday: Medea

They wanted to call it hope. I stared at the line I’d written as I bunched up the fluffy, white pillow beneath me, trying find a comfortable position on my bed that didn’t make writing impossible. Scratching out the line, I frowned, mulling over where to begin.

Mythology Monday: Hephaestus

September 14, 2015June 11, 2016 / kaitlinbevis / 2 Comments

Ares knocked again, lacing it with enough power to shake the building. “I know you’re in there!” “Go away!” A gruff voice shouted back. “Aw, hell.” Ares clenched his fist and flames sprang up from his flesh. He touched his hand to the glass, and it shattered. “That’s—” I started. “Awesome?” Ares interrupted, flashing me … Continue reading Mythology Monday: Hephaestus

Mythology Monday on Tuesday: Poseidon

May 26, 2015May 24, 2015 / kaitlinbevis / 3 Comments

**posting delayed a day in honor of Memorial Day** I turned to see a tall man striding toward us through the shallow surf. He had a flowing blond beard, a deep tan, and was dressed casually in board shorts and nothing else. I raised my eyebrows at his six-pack and gave Hades a speculative look. … Continue reading Mythology Monday on Tuesday: Poseidon

For Real Friday: Scapegoating

March 13, 2015March 6, 2015 / kaitlinbevis / Leave a comment

Troy fell because of a beautiful woman. At least that’s what we’re taught. Helen was a trojan scapegoat and if you go back before her the entire thing was the “fault” of the goddess Nemesis. Rarely is Paris blamed. Even more rare are the tensions between the two factions involved in the war brought up. … Continue reading For Real Friday: Scapegoating

Mythology Monday: Helen of Troy

March 9, 2015March 4, 2015 / kaitlinbevis / 7 Comments

“So,” I said when they fell silent for a minute, “you two knew each other when you were alive, right? In Troy? What was it like?” The quality of the silence changed. I peeked through half open eyes to see Cassandra and Helen share a long look. “I’m so sorry,” I stammered. I couldn’t believe … Continue reading Mythology Monday: Helen of Troy

Mythology Monday: Pirithous

March 2, 2015February 28, 2015 / kaitlinbevis / 4 Comments

“How beautiful.” I jumped, spinning around to face the man on the other side of the counter. “I’m sorry?” “The flowers.” He gave me a strange look. “They’re beautiful. Poppies and daffodils, right?” I made a noncommittal noise, and he smiled as if pleased to have guessed right. “It looks great. You have a real … Continue reading Mythology Monday: Pirithous

Mythology Monday: Orpheus

February 23, 2015June 11, 2016 / kaitlinbevis / 1 Comment

“What is so important to you that it is worth traveling through the fires of Hell?” Hades asked. “My wife, Eurydice. We were hiking, and a snake bit her. I couldn’t get help in time. She died.” He looked up at us, his eyes glassy with emotion. “I have to get her back.” Hades nodded. … Continue reading Mythology Monday: Orpheus

Mythology Monday: Demigods

February 16, 2015June 11, 2016 / kaitlinbevis / Leave a comment

“How will I know who’s a demigod?” “By sight. As halflings, they’ll have ichor running through their veins.” I looked at him blankly and he sighed. “The golden blood of the gods?” “I have gold blood?” I asked incredulously. At this point, why not, I thought ruefully. Hell, I can probably fly. “Not in color,” … Continue reading Mythology Monday: Demigods

Mythology Monday: Meet an Argonaut: Castor and Pollux

January 13, 2014June 11, 2016 / kaitlinbevis / 5 Comments

The Gemini twins. I wanted to be a Gemini so badly when I was younger. Depending on the magazine, I’m either a Libra or a Scorpio. I also *really* wanted to be a twin. Alas, I am still neither. Anyhow, Castor and Pollux were Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra’s half brothers. Pollux was the son … Continue reading Mythology Monday: Meet an Argonaut: Castor and Pollux
