Thursday Review: Sway by Jennifer Gibson

20121004-225051.jpg

This was an interesting book. Sway features a teenager named Jessie who struggles with a hearing impairment in what is probably the least tolerant community ever written. She finds herself through a self defense class, and Ethan, her karate teacher’s son. Jessie goes on to have some really exciting adventures I won’t go into to much detail about. The book has something exciting happening every few pages, whether it’s a terrifying tornado, or a crushing birthday party, or the other stuff I won’t go into, Jessie is in a constant state of emotional flux.

The good: I cared about the characters, and this novel handles slice of life good. Gibson drops the reader smack dab into the middle of Jessie’s life and lets them navigate the confusion right along beside her. High school is hard enough without a hearing impairment, so the experience added another layer to what would otherwise be considered universal. I enjoyed the book and kept reading right to the very end.

The nit-picky: Gibson has perfected show don’t tell down to an art, but I think she got to good at it. There were times when I felt like I needed more information that didn’t come for chapters, or in some cases not at all. For example, what level of hearing loss does Jessie suffer? How does it work? But the information I wanted would have risked turning the book into a public service announcement or a thinly disguised educational/disability awareness opportunity that would have been condescending and skewed the whole plot.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and give it four stars. Buy your copy, or learn more about Jennifer Gibson here.

Top Ten Tuesday

From Broke and Bookish:

This week is fictional crushes: Warning, I’m very very weird

1) Darien from Sailor Moon: Not technically a book but I loved this man for many many years. Like really loved him. I cried every time he died, and wanted to be Sailor Moon more than anything else in the whole wide world for an embarrassingly long time.

20121004-222121.jpg

2) Julien from Forbidden Games: He sounded hot and was sad and stuff

20121004-222434.jpg

3) Triskal from This Present Darkness: Yes, I had a crush on an angel, but to be fair I read this book very very young and I feel bad for people who get beat up

20121004-222557.jpg

4) Legolas from Lord of the Rings: The movie may have had something do do with this

20121004-222807.jpg

5) Raistlin from Dragonlance: I’d probably hate him in real life, but whatever

.

20121004-222919.jpg

6) Damon from the Vampire Diaries: I like bad boys, what can I saw. By the way, this was WAY before the series, but this actor does him justice

20121004-223020.jpg

7) Hades from Persephone: What, I’m not allowed to fall for my own character?

20121004-223123.jpg

8) Jacob from Twilight: There! I said it. It’s more the actor than… You know what’s really sad, he was playing shark boy my senior year of high school. I just have to keep reminding myself of that. I’m not used to being to old for someone!

20121004-223312.jpg

9) Angel from Buffy

20121004-223552.jpg

10) Miguel from Eldorado. I don’t know… I don’t know…

Happy Birthday Bella!

Three years ago today my beautiful baby girl was born. It feels like it was just yesterday and now all of the sudden she’s in preschool!

She’s brilliant, and beautiful and perfect. I love her so much! Happy Birthday Bella

Top 10 Tuesday: Older Books

Older books I don’t want anyone to forget about:

YA books were around before Harry Potter. Granted, these are mostly children’s books because I was eleven when Harry Potter came out. But my point is, I loved to read YA before it took off, and these authors and books are the reason why.

1) Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Product DetailsThis is, without a doubt, the best children’s book ever written. I love it. The movie was awful, but everyone should read this book before they die.

2) The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C Wrede

Product DetailsI’m counting the days until my daughter is old enough for me to read this book series out loud to her. It’s a hysterical twist on a princess and dragon story. I read the fourth book of this series first, and in many ways I’m glad because I think the fourth book was much less depressing for me than it should have been.

3) The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

Product Details

This was another series read out of sequence, and I’m glad. I don’t think the first two books are very strong compared to what came next. Fantastic series though

4) Aliens ate my Homework by Brice Coville

Product Details

Actually my favorite of this series is My teacher flunked the planet. I remember thinking how deep this story was because it talked about real issues like world hunger.

5) Forbidden Games by L.J Smith

Product Details

A very different take on the Persephone/Hades myth that influenced me at a very young age. Actually, everything by L.J Smith influenced me a ton as a writer. Her stuff was amazing. It may not look all that impressive now, but you have to understand how much YA as a genre has changed since the early 90’s. The entire genre evolved and this author is part of the reason why.

6) Scary StoriesProduct Details

I remember having sleepovers with friends dedicated to reading these books. Some of the stories were pretty lame, but some still give me nightmares.

7) Fear Street by R.L Stine

Product Details

Classic series, you can’t forget about Fear Street

8) So you Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane

Product Details

This series is still amazing. Everyone should read it. Again, huge influence on my writing.

9) The Immortals by Christopher Pike

Product Details

This had a HUGE impact on my vision of the Greek Gods as a child. I should also throw in his Last Vampire Series as an honorable mention.

10) The Witch’s Sister by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Product Details

Scariest series I ever read as a child

11) Sweet Valley Twins/babysitter’s club/ full house book series

I’m going over my 10 because these books, formulaic as they were, set the groundwork for YA today. I loved the scary versions

13) Enders Game

Product Details

sci-fi classic. Everyone should read it

14) Judy Bloom Books/ Caroline B Cooney

These books were always right next to each other in the library, so they don’t separate well in my head. But again, laying the groundwork for YA today, and good books.

15) Bunnicula

Product Details

my first scary story

What’s Persephone? Read my Blurb and Excerpt to find out!

There are worse things than death, worse people too.

The “talk” was bad enough, but how many teens get told that they’re a goddess? When her mom tells her, Persephone is sure her mother has lost her mind. It isn’t until Boreas, the god of winter, tries to abduct her that she realizes her mother was telling the truth. Hades rescues her, and in order to safely bring Persephone to the Underworld he marks her as his bride. But Boreas will stop at nothing to get Persephone. Despite her growing feelings for Hades, Persephone wants to return to the living realm. Persephone must find a way to defeat Boreas and reclaim her life.

Excerpt:

The branch crashed in front of me, scraping my legs. I ran for the parking lot as fast as I could. The frost closed in, surrounding me. I’d never been claustrophobic, but as the frost cut off my escape path with a solid white wall, I panicked.

Fog rolled in, like cold death, cutting off my view of the park. It curled around me, brushing against my face, arms, and legs. I turned back to the tree and ran faster, my dress tangling between my legs as the fog and icy wind blew against my skin.

The parking lot is the other way! ;my mind screamed. The other way was cut off by a mountain of ice. I felt as if I was being herded. ;By ice?

I slipped on the icy ground, falling face first into the frost. Ice crept up my toes and along my legs. I thrashed and screamed. I felt the fog becoming a solid mass above me, pinning me to the ground. The ice piled around me. ;Am I going to be buried alive?

I dug my nails into the frigid snow in front of me and tried to claw my way out of the frosted death trap. I was so panicked I didn’t feel it when my nails broke against the impenetrable wall of ice, leaving red crescents of blood welling up on sensitive skin. An hysterical sob worked its way out of my throat as I gouged red lines into the ice. The ice was above my knees, snaking its way up my thighs. I shivered.

Shivering’s good, ;I reminded myself. ;It means your body hasn’t given up…yet. ;The cold was painful, like a thousand little knives pricking my skin. A violent tremor went up my spine, sending waves of pain through me.

“Help me!” I screamed, knowing it was futile. I was going to die here.

Except I couldn’t die. Could I? Mom said I was immortal, but was that all-inclusive? Did I have a weakness? Was snow my Kryptonite? If I got hurt, would I heal or would I be trapped in an injured body in pain forever?

I suddenly didn’t know if immortality was a good thing or a bad thing. The cold hurt. I was kicking, screaming, and clawing my way out of the frost, but for every inch I gained a mountain piled around me. I thought I heard a man’s laughter on the wind, the sound somehow colder than the ice freezing me into place.

The ground before my outstretched hand trembled. The shaking increased. The earth lurched beneath me. The surface cracked and the sound was so loud that for a moment all I could hear was high-pitched ringing in my ears. The ground split into an impossibly deep crevice. My voice went hoarse from screaming as I peered into the endless abyss, trapped and unable to move away from the vertigo-inducing edge.

Girly Book Blog Hop: Introducing Cassandra

Some background: Cassandra is a secondary character in my young adult novel, Persephone. She’s also a pretty major prophet in Greek Mythology

I can’t really call Cassandra my character. She’s popped up in books, movies, and television shows for centuries. She has a fascinating back story and manages to appear in a huge variety of myths. She helps Hercules, she witnesses the fall of Troy, and she even made a guest appearance on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But every incarnation I’ve ever seen of Cassandra focused on one thing.

Her life sucked. She was raped by Apollo and cursed with visions of the future that no one would believe so long as she lived. The visions drove her nuts. Can you imagine what it would be like to know something horrible was going to happen and not do anything to stop it? As if all that wasn’t bad enough she was part of the royal house in Troy, and they weren’t treated very well after the war.

But that was life. My Cassandra’s a bit different because she’s dead. And she’s having a great time. She still has the visions, but that whole bit about no one believing her so long as she lived no longer applies. She’s Hades’ most trusted advisor, and she practically runs the Underworld. She’s over the top cheerful, but she’s got a healthy sense of snark. She doesn’t put up with much drama and has a very practical way of looking at things.

In all the scenes she’s in, her voice is always a welcome one. I’m even toying with the idea of writing a prequel that’s narrated by her, and her sister-in-law, Helen of Troy. I’d love to write that story, but the research aspect alone is daunting. Persephone appears in three major myths, and those three myths took weeks of research to tie in as many aspects into the story as possible. Troy… that’s a lot of material, and the Trojan war is just a fraction of the myths Helen and Cassandra are a part of.

It would be a long project, but I think it would be worth it. If I’m willing to wade through all that just to write more scenes with her, she really must be my favorite character.

Original Prologue to Persephone: Hades’ Perspective

Prologue

She was beautiful. Hades hadn’t expected that. Silly really, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter would hardly be plain. He wasn’t sure what he had been expecting as he tore his way through the earth. He hadn’t taken the time to think, had only been advised of what was happening above his realm, and acted.

She held her head high as the ice retreated. Her fists clenched in defiance as her white dress swirled around her petite frame. She had to be frightened. He could almost see her pulse hammering in her throat. Still, she stood calmly facing his chariot as he drew to a halt.

He felt as though he was seeing the sun for the first time. Had she only been beautiful, he would have been able to tear his gaze away from her. He had seen no shortage of beauties in his long and lonely existence. Helen of Troy, Andromeda, even Oreithyia could not have matched this girl for beauty. It was the purity and intelligence sparkling from her cypress green eyes that held him captive. That she was still standing spoke of immeasurable bravery to say nothing of that defiantly clenched fist.

He loomed over her, in his black chariot. He was trapped in her gaze, unable to move forward. His mind kept repeating an endless refrain of thanks that he had not been too late. Another thought kept edging to the forefront of his brain. He tried to shove it back unsuccessfully. He had to have her.

That she would complicate his life beyond measure was of no importance. Demeter would be furious. If this begat a war with the few gods left, so be it. Cassandra had warned him this would happen one day. Gods help him, he’d thought she was kidding.

Top Ten Tuesdays: Top 10 Series I didn’t finish

1) House of Night by PC Cast

Product Details

I really enjoyed the first couple of books from this series. But after a while, I just got tired of Zoe stringing along every.single.guy.in.the.series. Plus the timeline doesn’t make sense. School just started like a week ago by book what, 50?

2) In Death Series by JD Robb

Celebrity In Death

This is my go to series when I run out of books, but I have a hard time keeping up with books I’ve read versus books I haven’t. Pretty formulaic, but the biggest reason I haven’t finished this series because new books come out all time time

3) Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine

Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires, Book 1)

I actually really enjoyed this series, but the books are so expensive and it’s such a short read, that when a plot line ended and a new one picked up (around book 11 I believe) I took that opportunity to stop reading the series.

4) Dragonlance by Margaret Weiss and Tracey Hickman

Product Details

Lets face it, awesome series but there is no way anyone will ever have enough time to finish every single book in it. I made a point to read any new ones by the big two writers of it (see above) but they took a super long break between trilogies (multiple years) and I haven’t picked it back up yet

5) The Hollows by Kim Harrison

A Perfect Blood (The Hollows)

I like this series, I just haven’t gotten back to it since Pale Demon. I’m so far behind on all my reading

6) Anita Blake by Laurel K Hamilton

Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter)

I read the first of this, and it was… I’m just not an erotica reader. That’s all.

7) Parker Blue’s bite me series

Make Me

I really liked the first book. I would have liked the second book, except that they did this thing with internal dialogue WHERE WHEN A TELEPATHIC CHARACTER SPOKE IT WAS ALWAYS IN ALL CAPS. EVERY SINGLE LINE OF SPEACH FROM THIS ONE CHARACTER WAS WRITTEN LIKE THIS. IT WAS VERY JARRING.

I couldn’t finish the book, so I can’t finish the series. Which is such a shame because it was SO good

8) Evermore by Alyson Noel

Evermore: The Immortals

I really couldn’t get into this series. It made no sense to me. I don’t know what kind of mental barrier I hit, it sounded interesting, but it just… I couldn’t understand the characters or their motivation.

9) True Blood by Charlaine Harris

True Blood Volume 1: All Together Now

I really like Mrs. Harris, her Shakespeare town series is awesome. I just couldn’t get past the first book for this one. I know, I’m a traitor to all poplar fiction.

10) So you want to be a wizard by Diane Duane

So You Want to Be a Wizard

One of my favorite childhood series came out with a few books many many many many years after Wizards at War. I just haven’t picked it back up yet.

The Search for Cerberus

If you’ve read Persephone, then you know that Cerberus, the giant three headed guard dog of the Underworld has been missing ever since Hercules borrowed him and drank from the Lethe.

Hades still misses his dog, so the search is on. I’ll be hosting a search for Cerberus web quest that will be going on until the sequel to Persephone, Daughter of the earth and Sky, is released on January 4th.

I need a few things from my readers. First, a picture of Cerberus in some unlikely location. I’ll be accepting entries, and we’ll be voting on them until December 1st. The winner will get a mention in the sequel as the person who discovered Cerberus in that unlikely hiding place. You’ll also win an advanced copy of Daughter of the Earth and Sky

December 1-31 the webquest will go live. Anyone who finds Cerberus and comments on his location will have a shot of winning one of three free copies of Daughter of the Earth and Sky.

Let the search begin:
